The Institute for Pulmonary Diseases of Vojvodina, Serbia, is well established tertiary healthcare institution, dedicated to respiratory and chest disorders which serves as referential institution for 56 years. The Institute handles over 170000 procedures and with more than 7000 hospitalizations requiring state of the art diagnostic and therapeutic interventions. Recently the Institute, with management team leading by Prof Branislav Perin, underwent structural and function changes which enabled the institution and the employees to follow and to fit into the progress of modern medical science. The urge for expansion of institutional core activity, broadening it to basic science research, wide social policy, availability of medical care to population with special needs and implementation of informatics technologies to healthcare system was accepted. The scientific output is internationally recognized, research papers with results of clinical trials conducted by Institute experts are published in some of the most prestigious international peer-reviewed journals. Large number of these results is incorporated into international guidelines. One of the latest achievements was organization of international Fourth Congress of Respiratory Medicine, with over 50 international speakers from 18 countries, which gathered over 1000 of respiratory physicians from the region. In spite of the economic difficulties of this developing country, advances which are reflected through implementation of new technologies, rapid scientific growth and steadfast professional training of employees rank the Institute as the leading health institution in the domain of respiratory medicine in the region.
