The Eastern University, Sri Lanka, was established on the 01st of October 1986. The University was preceded by the Batticaloa University College established on 01st August 1981 consisting two faculties viz. Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Agriculture. Now the university has three more faculties viz. Faculty of Commerce & Management, Faculty of Arts & Culture and Faculty of Health-Care Science. In addition, Faculty of Technology is yet to be established very soon. Further, we plan to establish the Faculties for Graduate studies and Peace studies in near future and degree programme in Tourism. The University has many linkages with many other Universities across the world. Trincomalee Campus and Swamy Vipulananda Institute of Aesthetic Studies are also functioning under the Eastern University, Sri Lanka. About 300 academic staff, 25 Executive Officers and320 non-academic staff are working and more than 4000 students are studying in the University at present. The degrees courses offered by the University are MBBS, B.Sc.( Nursing), B.Sc (Agric.), B.Sc, BBA, B.Com and B.A. Postgraduate degree programmes such as M.Phil, M.A. and M.Sc. are also conducted by the University. At present, Eastern University, Sri Lanka, National Centre of Excellence for Higher Education and Research in the Eastern Province, is making its unified attempt to improve the functions of the University at all levels, to increase student intake by improving and expanding degree programmes both undergraduate and postgraduate, to produce innovative, creative and entrepreneurial graduates equipped with requisite competencies and social skills, to promote research in various disciplines and to make a greater contribution to the development of the region and the country to achieve the objectives of the Vision and Mission of the University.
