Description

In 2000, the theatre company Os Satyros arrived at Roosevelt Square, an area in São Paulo downtown then controlled by criminality, prostitution and drug trafficking. They opened a theatre and started an urban renew in the place. Afterwards, other artistic collectives arrived at Roosevelt’s and consolidated the phenomena. They were then invited to create a theatre school there with other artists. From 2006 and 2009, they developed a pedagogical system for this new institution.

Thus, they established Associação dos Artistas Amigos da Praça (Adaap), a non-profit social organization created in order to develop artistic and educational projects.

In 2010, Adaap created and implemented SP Escola de Teatro (SP Theatre School), an institution that serves about 2000 students per year, with training in the areas of Acting; Dramaturgy; Directing; Light Design; Sound Design; Costumes and Scenography; Stage Technician and Mime.

Its teaching system prioritizes the pedagogical and artistic investigation of the different areas responsible for the theatrical language, within the aesthetic, ethical and technical scope. It’s innovative teaching methods quickly resulted in several awards and connections with several institutions all over the world, such as Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Stockholm University of the Arts, Helsinki University of the Arts, Zurich University of the Arts and Escola Superior Artística do Porto. More than 100 student and teacher’s exchange have been made so far.

In 2017, Adaap started MT Escola de Teatro (MT Theatre School) another audacious project, in Mato Grosso State, using the same original pedagogical principles. Nowadays, it’s programs are part of the State University of Mato Grosso (Unemat).
