National Law University and Judicial Academy, Assam was established by the National Law University and Judicial Academy, Assam Act, 2009 (Act No. XXV of 2009) as the fourteenth National Law University of the country and is located in Guwahati, the capital city of Assam. Hon’ble, the Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court is the Chancellor of the University. The University is affiliated to the UGC under Section 12(B) and 2(f) of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956, the Bar Council of India (BCI) and the Association of Indian Universities (AIU). The University has initiated the process of its accreditation by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).

The objectives of the National Law University and Judicial Academy, Assam are:

• To impart comprehensive legal education and training at all levels to achieve excellence in legal education
• To promote research in all branches of law
• To disseminate legal knowledge by organising lectures, seminars, symposia, workshops and conferences on contemporary issues of law
• To promote legal awareness in the communities to achieve social and economic justice
• To promote cultural, legal and ethical values with a view to fostering rule of law and the objectives enshrined in the Constitution of India
• To liaise with institutions of higher learning and research in India and abroad in order to create a platform for exchanging intellectual ideas on legal education and research.

Presently, National Law University and Judicial Academy, Assam is offering the following courses:

• Ph.D. Programme

University Academia

National Law University, Assam has a strong contingent of well-experienced, committed and qualified permanent faculty members, with a blend of senior and young teachers. To provide specialised learning, eminent experts/scholars are invited to deliver guest lectures on cutting edge knowledge related to varied aspects of the legal profession. The visiting and adjunct faculty members, inter alia, include both serving as well as retired judges of the Supreme Court of India and the Gauhati High Court, other High Courts, practicing lawyers from the Supreme Court, High Courts and Trial Courts, distinguished academicians, corporate lawyers and alumni of reputed National Law Universities across the nation.

Campus Infrastructure

The University is built on a sprawling 50 acres of beautiful landscape at Amingaon, Guwahati, which is situated on the North bank of the Brahmaputra River with an imposing hill on the other side. The campus, at present, houses the Administrative Block, Academic Block, Boys’ Hostel, Girls’ Hostel, Library, Multi-Purpose Stadium, Power House, Security Barrack, Guest House and Staff Quarters where all modern amenities are available. Construction of Quarters for teaching staff, Vice-Chancellor’s Bungalow, 300 Bed Hostel are underway. Judicial Academy, Assam is located in the University campus, a unique experiment in legal education in which Judicial Academy and the University co-exist in the same precinct. 

National Law University and Judicial Academy, Assam campus has state-of-the art infrastructure. The air-conditioned Academic Block is equipped with sophisticated facilities in class rooms with smart board, LCD screen, projector, Video Conferencing TV, Document Viewer, spacious seating arrangements, etc. Two Moot Court Halls with all modern facilities, one in Academic Block and another in Administrative Bloc are provided. In addition, there are a number of meeting rooms, discussion lounges, faculty rooms, various Research Centres facilitated with all modern amenities in the Academic Block.

Adjacent to the Academic Block is the Administrative Block with modern facilities housing the VC’s Office, Offices of the Registrar, the Finance Officer, the Deputy Registrar and Assistant Registrars. The Academic, Administrative, Finance and Engineering Sections are also located herein. Well facilitated Meeting Hall and Conference Hall are located in the Administrative Block where meetings of Statutory Bodies and other academic and administrative functions are organized.

National Law University and Judicial Academy, Assam has a well-equipped Health Centre to provide first-aid and basic medical facilities. To respond to any kind of medical emergency the University provides 24x7 ambulance service. The University also provides an air-conditioned bus for transportation of students for their academic visits to Courts, Legal Aid Camps and for other co-curricular activities.

Two hostels, one for boys and the other for girls, with single and double occupancy rooms, smokeless kitchen, spacious dining area, reading hall, gymnasium, yoga facility, prayer hall and library room, etc. are located in the campus. A Counselling Centre has been established and an experienced counsellor has been appointed by the University to address issues relating to academic and non-academic stress, and to foster positive behaviour and personality development among students. The University provides barrier free infrastructural facilities in all its buildings for People with Disability (PwD).

University Library

On the topmost floor of the Administrative Block, the Library has been set up as a temporary measure, however, the same shall be shifted to an independent building soon as the new library building is constructed. Library has a collection of more than sixteen thousand seven hundred titles in the field of Law, Social Sciences and Humanities. Over the years, the library has procured various Law Journals, both print and electronic. Online databases such as LexisNexis, Manupatra, JSTOR, Westlaw India, SCC Online, HEIN Online, DELNET, Cambridge Book Online, and ELGAR have also been made available to facilitate access to quality material by students, research scholars, faculty members and visiting scholars. The University provides Remote Access Facility to the students and faculty members while they are away from campus. With the use of VPN connectivity, the e-resources and databases can be browsed via internet irrespective of the physical location of the user.

University Centres

The University has established several Centres to promote advanced legal studies and research. The Centres have been set up by the University with the intent to addressing the socio-legal issues and challenges with challenges with specific thrust on the North-East region. The Centres are actively engaged in conducting seminars, conferences, training programmes and research projects on research areas/ target groups pertinent to NE India.

Publications

The University is intently engaged with a variety of socio-legal issues, which is reflected in its publication of Journals, viz. NLUA Law and Policy Review; NLUA Law Review; Journal of Enviro-Legal Research and Advocacy, Journal for Disability Studies and Policy Review, Child Rights Law and Policy Review, Journal of Sports Law, Policy and Governance, Journal of Corporate Law and Policy Research, etc.  The University also has to its credit the publication of a fortnightly newsletter, ‘Lex Terra’, a quarterly newsletter; ‘The Green Advocate’ and ‘Nyayalok, a bi-annual newsletter. The University also publishes newsletters under the aegis of the Centre for Advanced Research in Corporate Law and Centre for Child Rights. The University has also published a few books and monographs.
