Description
Surabaya was built by people who come from many regions, both domestic and foreign. They blend and create a plural yet harmonic Surabaya. This is because of the characteristic of Surabaya which opens to new things and egalitarian. The touch with new culture does not eliminate the characteristic of the city because the city government and all of its people always preserve the local culture of Surabaya. As a big city, Surabaya is the destination for those who come from many regions and cultural background. Since its very first beginning, Surabaya was known as Ujung Galuh and it was the main port of the Majapahit Empire. As the port city, Ujung Galuh is the first place where various cultures met through the interaction for the merchants. This situation made Surabaya became open-minded and tolerant toward new things. Nowadays, Surabaya becomes the home for various cultures, and like the philosophy of the home, they blended with the others and gave a life for the city. The multicultural life in Surabaya is supported by various ethnics, like the Chinese, Arabs, Indians, Europeans, and Americans. But not only those who came from foreign countries, but also the various ethnics of Indonesia live in Surabaya, like Madura, Batak, Bali, Kalimantan, and Sulawesi. Along with the locals they live handin-hand and build a new, plural, and tolerant Surabaya. The mixture of cultures makes Surabaya different compared to other cities. Surabaya becomes a heterogenic city with various and mixed ethnicities. The most specific characteristic is the open communication and straight-to-the point. It gives a positive effect of the courage to give critics and ready to receive critics. Surabaya is very related to the nickname of the City of Heroes because of the big battle of the arek-arek Suroboyo (people of Surabaya) fought against the Allies army on 10 November 1945. The heroic values of arek-arek Suroboyo are not only kept in the history, but also implemented in the daily life. The history of Surabaya leaves many historical buildings in many corners of the city. The City Government set the rule to protect the historical buildings by making them as the cultural heritage. The cultural heritage buildings are in line, especially in the central and northern Surabaya and those buildings are maintained and well-preserved. They become the alternative for tourism objects for the people. To complete the historical buildings, Surabaya regularly celebrate the Heroes Day with many events. Many events are held to give the education towards all people to be always fire the heroic spirit of all citizens. Heroism will be nothing without nationalism. Therefore, there are some Sekolah Kebangsaan (literally translated as Nationalism School) which are developed by the City Government and some universities in Surabaya to transmit the nationalism towards the people.
