Kokrajhar town is the headquarter of Kokrajhar district as well as Headquarter of Bodoland Territorial Council, created on 10th February, 2003 comprising of four districts viz. Kokrajhar, Chirang, Baska, Udalguri on the north bank of Brahmaputra within Assam. The Kingdom of Bhutan is intricately linked with the district in many vital aspects of life. There is hassle free movement across the international border with Bhutan. Regional Linkages: Road Connectivity: The town is well connected to the country and other parts of Assam both through B.G. line and other high way road transport modes. Air connectivity: The Kokrajhar is well connected with the Guwahati city, Capital of Assam and it is at 230 km away from Guwahati by road. The Guwahati is well connected with other cities of India by air with frequent flight schedules. International Border: The kingdom of Bhutan is intricately linked with the district of Kokrajhar in many vital aspects of life of the people living both in the Bhutan hills and the plains of Kokrajhar. NH 31C links Kokrajhar to the Bhutanese town of Gelephu and is just across the international boundary there is substantial movement of the people across the international border for the purpose of business and tours. Population Growth: Kokrajhar Urban Area: The population of Kokrajhar Municipality area was increased from 31,164 in 2001 to 34,136 in 2011 by 9.54% increase. The population of total Master Plan area increased from 83,648 in 2001 to 99,807 in 2011 by 19%. Master Plan Area: The total Kokrajhar Master Plan Urban Area is 125.78 sq.km including Kokrajhar Municipality Area of 8.24 sq.km. Population Density: Apart from the Municipal Area, the planning area as a whole is thinly populated. The gross density of population of Kokrajhar Municipal area in 1971 was approx. 1977 p/sq.km. and in 1988 it was 3212 p/sq.km. while that of planning area was 741 p/sq.km during 1988. Now the population density of Municipality area is increased to 3784 p/sq.km. in 2001 and 4144 p/sq.km. in 2011 while the population density of whole Master Plan Area is 665 p/sq.km. in 2001 and 793 p/sq.km. The population density in Kokrajhar Master Plan Area excluding Municipality is 446 p/sq.km. in 2001 and 559 p/sq.km. in 2011. This indicates that the density of population is increasing in all the areas. Population Projection: The population of Greater Kokrajhar Master Plan Area is estimated and found to be increasing from 99,807 in 2011 to 1,15,136 in 2021, 1,30,479 in 2031, 1,45,293 in 2040 and 1,47,176 in 2041. Government Local Bodies: The Kokrajhar Town is the Headquarter of Kokrajhar district as well as Headquarter of Bodoland Territorial Council. It has the following development local bodies: Kokrajhar Municipality Board: Post British rule in the year 1956 Kokrajhar town committee was formed to look after the various civic needs of the resident growing community and it got the status of Municipal Board in the Year 1970. Simultaneously with the efforts of the Town and Country Planning Department there has resulted in a manifold rise in its population and development. Kokrajhar Development Authority: The Kokrajhar Development Authority was established in the year 2008 for taking care of various development activities. The existing Master Plan of Kokrajhar consists of 60 revenue villages and 10 wards.
